Gardening is no easy task in Colorado. Dry weather and strong sunlight can be challenging for even the greenest thumbs. Late February is a time to daydream about juicy red tomatoes and bright flowers blossoming in your backyard. A good garden takes time and planning. It means tilling the soil, enriching the earth with fertilizer and water. It means pulling out the old weeds and dead plants from last year.

It’s heart season. Go into Walgreens and there are hearts everywhere. You’ll see paper hearts, chocolate hearts, candy hearts and more. We’re approaching Valentine’s Day, February 14. For many this is a day of love or a night of romance. Meet your sweetheart for dinner or dessert? For others, it is a day of heartbreak— recalling a broken relationship and or love that was not returned.  

Many of us fill every quiet moment with sound — music, conversation, distraction — without realizing what we’re avoiding. In this short reflection, Fr. Joe Laramie, SJ, invites us to reconsider silence not as emptiness, but as a place of rest, attentiveness, and encounter.

My dad died in March. He lived with kidney cancer for seven years. I preached at his funeral. I am mourning my father, and I am asking God the Father for mercy and help.
